BACKGROUND: Issued on 5th May 1994 to commemorate the 1994 INTERNATIONAL STAMP FAIR held in ESSEN from 5th to 8th May 1994. A sign of the growing popularity of collecting telephone cards is that the fair was a joint promotion which included the 1st International Telephone card Fair.

FEATURES: This card measures 148 x 105mm and was produced on white coloured card. The left-hand side is the sender's section and contains four dotted lines for the sender's address and the words "Absender", "(Straße und Hausnummer oder Postfach)", "(Postleitzahl)" and "(Ort)". There are an additional three lines of text below the image that read "Historischer Krupp-Löschzug in Essen auf der | 10. Internationalen Briefmarken-Messe | 1. Internationalen Telefonkarten-Messe 5.-8. Mai 1994".

The right-hand or destination section contains four dotted lines for the destination address as well as the words "Postkarte", "(Straße und Hausnummer oder Postfach)", "(Postleitzahl)" and "(Bestimmungsort)".

The reverse of the card is blank and 470,000 cards were printed. Sale of the cards was only at the fair itself in ESSEN from 5th to 8th May 1994.

The pre-printed stamp is a multicoloured Michel 1732, 80 Pf stamp and has the inscription "EUROPA | ENTDECKUNG DES OHMSCHEN GESETZES | EUTSCHES BUNDESPOST | U=R.I" . As any budding electronics hobbyist will tell you V=R*I, or voltage = resistance x current, is one of the basic laws of electricity.

4. 2nd RELATED SST USED IN ESSEN on 5.05.1994

The second SST used at the Fair can be seen below used on 5th and 7th May 1994 and bearing the inscription "ESSEN 119 | 10. INTERNATIONAL BRIEFMARKEN-MESSE 45131 SAMMLER-SERVICE-DER POST | Wir | Frauen | sammeln".

5. 3rd RELATED SST USED IN ESSEN on 5.05.1994

The third SST used at the Fair can be seen below and bears the inscription "ESSEN 119 | 10. INTERNATIONAL BRIEFMARKEN-MESSE 45131 1. INTERN. TELEFONKARTEN-MESSE | SAMMLER | SERVICE DER POST". This cancellation commemorates the 1st International Telephone Card Collector's Fair.

The examples below show that this SST was used on the 5th and 7th May 1994

The fourth SST used at the Fair can be seen below and bears the inscription "ESSEN 119 | 10. INTERNATIONAL BRIEFMARKEN-MESSE 45131 SAMMLER-SERVICE-DER POST | 100 Jahre Essener Berufsfeuerwehr".

6. 5th RELATED SST USED IN ESSEN on 5.05.1994

The fifth SST used at the Fair can be seen below and bears the inscription "ESSEN 119 | AMTLICHES ERINNERUNGSBLATT 45131 DER DEUTSCHEN BUNDESPOST | Fußballweltmeisterschaft | 1994".

7. 6th RELATED SST USED IN ESSEN on 7.05.1994

The sixth SST used at the Fair can be seen below and bears the inscription "ESSEN 1 | 10 JAHRE UFSG E.V. 1984-1994 45131 50 JAHRE UNO 1945-1955 | Jahrestraffen| der UFSG e.V. | SAMMLERGEMEINSCHAFT e.V. UNO-FLUGPOST".

8. SST RELATED TO THE INDICIA STAMP USED IN BONN on 5.05.1994

The following SST although not related to the Fair is related to the pre-printed indicia stamp. The stamp features an electronic component known as a resistor and the SST is directly related. Inscribed "BONN 1 | Ω ∆E = h * v | U=R*I | EUROPA- | MARKEN 1994 | ERSTAUGABETAG | 05.05.1994 | 53111".

The equation U=R*I is one of the laws of electronics that states Voltage = Resistance * Current.
