BACKGROUND: Issued on 8th Aug 1985 to commemorate the 1985 PHILATELIA Exhibition held in KÖLN from 8th to 10th Nov 1985, and also the 100th Anniversary of the death of Carl Spitzweg and perhaps more significantly the 150th Anniversary of German Railways.

The image on the card is the inside of an early railway carriage and beneath it is the inscription "Philatelia '85 | Köln 8. - 10.11.1985 | mit Briefmarkenausstellung | "150 Jahre deutsche Eisenbahn"".

Frank Carl Spitzweg (5-Feb-1808 to 23-Sept-1885) was a German painter and draftsmen born in Munich. I'm not entirely sure of the connection between Spitweg and the image on the left of the card since it does not appear to be one of his paintings. However the image on the stamp is from a painting by Spitzweg, an oil on canvas, called "Sunday Stroll" painted in 1841. This painting currently resides in the Residenzgalerie in Salzburg, Austria.
